Online Education Has Its Downside

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Online education is much celebrated because of the many wonderful benefits it offers. Students have the capability to now complete four-year degrees in less than half of the time, due to condensed programs. Online students can complete their courses from the comfort of their home, without sacrificing time spent with family, or at work. As if that’s not enough, the courses can be completed at the convenience of the student, as opposed to a rigorous program where classes are structured at the discretion of the college faculty. However, in spite of the many advantages of distant learning, there is also a downside, as we are about to explore.

Studying at home may be convenient and preferable, especially for mothers of toddlers, but this does not say anything about the daily distractions that present themselves. Crying children, the TV or radio blaring, and the constant ringing of the phone are a few outside factors associated with distance learning. A tremendous amount of discipline on the part of the student is needed to evade the phone calls and avoid one’s favorite TV shows while homework is waiting. Plus, as there is no direct teacher supervision, procrastination can take over, and homework can find its way to the student’s desk at the last minute.

Research shows that online students risk a high chance of scoring less than their counterparts in their courses than those who take a traditional class at an actual campus location. But the upside is anyone who has successfully completed online classes has proven that they truly are a committed and disciplined individual.

Due to the popularity of online education and distance learning, many schools, organizations, and agencies have appeared claiming to offer online degrees. Many online schools have dubious origins, and may not even be actual schools at all. There are organizations online now claiming to have the capability to offer a four-year college degree in six months. There are even fraudulent dealers online who can sell online degrees for a fee, never requiring a student to attend class! Caution should be taken before enrolling in any online education program. Students need to be aware of which school are accredited and are credible.

As popular as online education has become, many employers still look down upon the quality of education they provide. Students who received degrees as traditional, residential students are preferred to those who have graduated with an online degree.

How To Work And Study While Gaining A Distance Learning Education

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Distance learning students and those pursuing online degree programs seem to enjoy the best of everything. They get their education without actually needing to attend classes physically, and at the same time are able to keep their jobs and get a paycheck. In fact, this is one of the more prominent distance learning benefits that attract many students to make this their choice of education. In addition to that, distance learning students also gain the advantage of flexibility where they are able to study at their own pace without adhering to class schedules.

However, even learning online is not perfect. It requires a lot of discipline to stay on task and keep personal priorities straight. As a learner, you must be intrinsically motivated to succeed. Without the in-class interaction between peers and the professor, it is more difficult to keep focused on the ultimate goal.

So, how can a distance learner overcome the challenges of shuffling work, school, and family? Creating and sticking to a schedule is the only way to survive and succeed. The trick is to apportion a 24 hour day to include enough time for the family, work, and school responsibilities. Thus, it is very important to let the family in on the plan, and when you should not be disturbed. Again, do not give into the temptation to deviate from the plan.

Staying motivated can be difficult for many who are earnestly striving for a distance learning education. Therefore, it is imperative to stay in contact with fellow students. With the availability of email, instant messages, class online message boards, and online chat, it is a great way to commiserate, encourage, and discuss assignments and projects. Staying in touch with other students taking the class helps in keeping each other active in class and accountable.

In addition to peer contact, rewarding personal education goals is an excellent way to stay motivated and succeed in obtaining a distance learning education. Write particular course milestones on a calendar, and then celebrate the achievement. For example, after turning in a major paper, do something nice for yourself. Then, cross out each accomplishment. With a sense of personal satisfaction, it will keep you motivated to face the next educational hurdle.

Finally, a quiet place to study, away from distractions, is paramount. The television, telephone, and family will be very distracting and take away from quality study. Set times to not be disturbed. If necessary, lock yourself in a quiet room with adequate space to spread out on a table or desk. Sit in a comfortable chair and add any necessary elements to ensure an environment conducive to productive study.

In short, successful completion of a distance learning education is totally dependent on good study habits and the determination of the individual to reach the pre-determined goal. Like any degree program, it takes old fashioned hard work, discipline, and the intrinsic motivation to succeed.
